Fall Festival and the Fiber Arts Studio

Last weekend we traveled to Brasstown, NC to visit the John C Campbell Folk School Fall Festival. The school was packed with demos, vendors, dancers, and musicians. There was so much to see and do that it took us 2 days to take it all in!

Painting by Lauren deSerres Kelischek

After a quick "Photo Op" our first stop was the quilting studio - of course! It was filled with quilts on display,
teachers doing demos, and quilting admirers. It's a huge room with everything needed for a quilting class. Really an awesome facility!

All of the quilts were beautiful, but here are some of my favorites:

You may recognize this quilt by Cathy Wiggins... It's "Sea Mates" and was her first attempt at painting a pictorial wholecloth. Cathy will be teaching a class on a simplified method of this technique in June, 2014.

Here's a closeup of Cathy's amazing painting and quilting!
This one is "White Fantasy" by Sammie Simpson - machine quilted on a domestic machine!
This one is "Welsh Wholecloth" by Pat Meinecke and it's hand quilted! There are a number of quilting classes coming up next year with various teachers such as Pat Meinecke and Pepper Cory.
I was really amazed by this quilt - it's a double-sided quilt with thread painting! It's called "Heron at Moonrise" and was made by Sue Royal. She learned the technique in a class at the folk school taught by Barbara Shapel. Barbara's next class is in September, 2014.
And this is the other side of Sue's quilt. Cool, huh?
This one was cleverly named "June Taylor Dancers", by Karen Reese Tunnell. She'll be teaching a class on Landscapes in January, 2014.
I really loved this one, but I can't read the placard, so I don't know whose quilt it is. But isn't it great?!

Look for more on the Fall Festival tomorrow!
